White space

noun, also negative space

Topic: Design and layout

  1. The empty area around and between the elements of a design: text, images, buttons and menus. It does not have to be white.
  2. It is not wasted room. Generous space makes pages easier to read and scan, helps the important things stand out, and makes a site feel calmer and more professional. The urge to fill every gap usually works against you; giving your best content more room works better.

Example Adding more white space around the product photos made the whole page easier to read.
