Content management system

see-em-ESSnoun, abbreviated CMS

Topic: Building and running a site

1. Software that lets people add and edit the pages, text and images of a website through a simple online control panel, without writing code.
2. WordPress is the best known example. A CMS is handy if you want to update your own pages, but it also adds software that must be kept up to date and secured, and it is only one of several ways of running a site. Many small business websites change only a few times a year, so it is worth asking whether you want to do the editing yourself or have someone do it for you.

Example The CMS lets the shop assistant swap a banner image without calling anyone.
