Backlink

noun

Topic: Search and visibility

  1. A link to your website from another website.
  2. Search engines treat links from reputable sites like recommendations, so they are one of the main things that help a page rank. Quality matters far more than quantity: one link from a respected trade body or local newspaper is worth more than hundreds from poor sites. Paying for links, or swapping them in bulk, can lead to penalties. The safest way to earn them is to be worth linking to, and to ask suppliers, partners and local directories.

Example A link from the supplier’s stockist page is a good backlink for a shop.
