SSL certificate
- A digital certificate that proves a website is genuine and scrambles the information sent between it and its visitors, shown by a padlock and https at the start of the address.
- Technically the modern version is called TLS, but everyone still says SSL. Any page that handles logins, personal details or payments needs one, browsers warn visitors away from sites without one, and search engines treat https as a small ranking signal. Certificates have to be renewed, so make sure someone is looking after yours.
Example The browser flagged the old site as not secure because its SSL certificate had expired.
