Data migration

noun

Topic: Stock, data and integrations

  1. Moving information, such as products, customers, orders or property listings, from an old system or website into a new one.
  2. Most of the effort is in the tidy-up: matching fields between the two systems, removing duplicates, fixing missing or inconsistent entries and checking that nothing was lost. Customer accounts need particular care, because passwords are stored securely and often cannot be moved as they are. A good migration is tried on a copy first and checked by the people who know the data best.

Example The migration brought across three thousand products, with their photos and stock levels.
